The collection consists of 186 letter press books, averaging 1,000 pages, including estimates, invoices, other correspondence with customers, and letters touching upon the problems of obtaining sawlogs, manufacturing, and marketing of lumber. A second group of letter press books consists of books from branch yards in Wheatland, Belle Plaine, Tama, Council Bluffs, and Omaha. Incoming correspondence is spread over 174 boxes. Freight bills, loading slips, time tickets, and cancelled checks are included as well as personal receipts and correspondence. The collection also includes several logs of Mississippi River towboats; approximately 43 Order Books; 10 Cash Books; 40 Ledgers; 31 Day Books; 40 Journals; 10 Pay Roll Books; 2 Plat Books; a Pine Land Register; and about 50 small account books. One large "Manifest Book" contains a copy of the Articles of Incorporation of the Mississippi River Logging Company in handwriting. Correspondence, letter press books, estimates, order books, sales records, cashbooks, ledgers, daybooks, journals, payroll books, account books, invoices, freight bills, loading slips, time tickets, canceled checks, trial balances, balance sheets, statistics on purchases and output, contracts, towboat logs, a pine land register, a manifest, and other records of the home office in Clinton and select branch offices.
